Within HCI, intimacy is among an emerging set of experiential values that also include curiosity, enjoyment, resonance, play and self-awareness. This paper developed a small number of sensory-enhanced, soft, tactile, pliable, throw-able pillows as intimate everyday object. Techniques are developed to use the surface of pillows as a tactile intellgent interface. The main sensors integrated in interactive pillows are a touch-based interface for measuring presure and accelerometers to measure motions. Fans, vibrators and light sources, either in the form of light emissive fibers or as a LED display. This paper proposed a notion of social intimacy and a scenario for social interaction.

Schiphorst, T., Nack, F., KauwATjoe, M., de Bakker, S., Stock, Aroyo, L., Rosillio, A.
